Birthstones being associated with calendar months actually dates back to the mention of 12 gemstones, placed within the breastplate of a high priest in the Bible's Old Testament. The 12 stones were associated with the 12 tribes of Israel but also became important representations of the 12 months and the 12 signs of the Zodiac.

By the 1400s, people of Poland began wearing these gemstones as birthstone jewellry to honor each of the twelve calendar months. Did they bring them more power? Some certainly think so.
